Class Rules

1.  Be prompt.
2.  Be prepared.
3.  Be positive.
4.  Be productive.

5.  Be polite.

Following these rules will make everyone's days more productive and enjoyable, and I am always happy to recognize students when they are doing their best.  However, if a student chooses to break a rule, he/she will need to take responsibility, and the following consequences will take place:

1st time:  Warning
2nd time:  Slip given; see below for school-wide policy:
  • 3 slips in one academic quarter for a minor infraction = lunch detention with Mrs. Krusky, Mrs. Wilcox, or a middle school teacher.
  • 1 slip in a quarter for a major infraction = lunch detention with Mrs. Krusky, Mrs. Wilcox, or a middle school teacher.
  • Slip must always be signed by Mrs. Krusky or Mrs. Wilcox and a parent and brought back the next day to the teacher who gave it.
  • If a student earns a detention, he/she may not participate in the next upcoming social event (dance, bowling field trip, etc.).
Continuing problem:  If a student receives a 4th slip or commits a very serious infraction, he/she will conference with the middle school staff, Mrs. Krusky, and his/her parent(s).

Homework Policies

Students are expected to turn in their homework on time in order to receive full credit.  If they do not, the following will happen:
  • Lose 1 letter grade for each day late.  On the 5th late day, the grade will be a zero.
  • If a student is absent, they have the same number of days to make up their work as they were gone from school (a student gone for 2 days has 2 extra days to turn in his/her work).

***Note:  I understand that occasional, unexpected situations occur that prevent students from completing their homework.  Therefore, I will allow each student 2 "freebie" homework assignments for the year, as long as a parent informs me by a note, e-mail, or phone call.

Grading Scale

The entire Lansing Diocese uses the following grading scale:
A  100%-92%       B  91%-82%       C  81%-72%       D  71-62%       E  61% or lower

A note on grades:  Much of our new language arts curriculum lends itself to standards-based grading.  This means that, instead of earning points that translate into a percentage, many of the students' language arts grades will be rated based on proficiency in each of the language arts standards approved by the school:

3=proficient or above
2=approaching proficiency with support
1=not proficient

When checking grades for this class on PowerSchool, you will notice many grades will be between 1 and 3.  PowerSchool also translates these into percentages and letter grades for report card purposes.  If you would like more information about the English language arts standards, click on the links below.

Conduct and Effort Grades
On your child’s report card, you will notice the four cardinal virtues listed toward the bottom. Each of the four cardinal virtues are broken into many subcategories.  STA teachers will be using the subcategories listed below to determine each student’s conduct and effort grades on a scale of 1-4 (4 being the best).

Justice = Conduct: Respect, Responsibility, Kindness
Temperance = Conduct:
Self-Control, Honesty
Prudence = Conduct/Effort: Good Judgment, Docility (willingness to be taught), Foresight
Fortitude = Effort: Industriousness, Perseverance
